Oh my gosh, Halloween is almost here! Do you feel this buzzing, spooky, yet super fun atmosphere? Personally, besides having to think about what to wear this year, the most important task is to dress up my “boss”. That’s right, in America, Halloween is no longer just a playground for humans; it’s a catwalk for furry kids!
Everyone knows that the pet costume industry is booming. In fact, this year it’s estimated that the market will reach half a billion dollars! Half a billion! What does that mean? That we love our pets so much that we’re willing to spend money to make them Instagram stars!
What’s the “Hottest” Trend This Year?
So, what are the designs that are making waves?
Forget the classic pumpkin or bat costumes (although Hot Dogs always win). This year, people are crazy about pop culture characters. Just look at Google Trends: puppies dressed as Grinch or Ewoks (from Star Wars) are in high demand. This proves we’re addicted to movies and want our pets to be in the loop too!
And the cats? The ladies still like it simple but powerful: Pumpkin or Lion. Oh, and don’t forget Mario! I have a friend in Seattle who is determined to find her fat Persian cat a gorgeous Glinda (from Wicked) costume. Can you feel the pressure to be creative? It’s exhausting and fun!
The key is comfort. Lightweight cape-like designs that don’t cover the face or ears, like Krypto the Superdog (just a simple red cape), are always popular with pet parents. We want to look good, but we don’t want to stress our pets out. If they’re grimacing, stomping their feet, or trying to take off their costume, cut them out! Switch to a Halloween-themed bandana and you’re good to go.
How to Buy Halloween Toys Safely?
Halloween toys are a big expense, too. Skulls, daggers, and creepy gummy bears are cool, but safety is number one, folks.
Here’s my experience: My dog, a very happy-go-lucky Labrador who’s also a hardcore toy destroyer, swallowed the tiny plastic eye off a stuffed bat last Halloween. Luckily, everything was fine after a quick trip to the vet (and nearly $150 in expenses!).
The lesson?
Stay away from small, easily swallowed items: Buttons, plastic eyes, bells, or anything else that can be chewed off. If your pet swallows these, there’s a high risk of intestinal obstruction.
Check for durability: If your dog is a “super chewer”, choose toys made from solid rubber, reinforced nylon, or reputable brands. Stay away from stuffed toys that are too soft.
Squeaker: While fun, if your pet tears the fabric and swallows the chip inside, it’s a big problem. It’s best to choose extremely durable toys, or toys that don’t have chips.
Halloween is all about having fun and making memories. Don’t let an ill-fitting shirt or a dangerous toy ruin your night with your four-legged friend! Be a smart and responsible pet parent!
